Chapter 10

AS BYRON tried to get his breathing back under control, Sweatyballs sat down and tapped on his console. "Ay, Captain."

Octowar flicked a switch and his voice echoed through the halls. "All hands on deck. Prepare for hyperspace launch. All ships in the fleet, set course for Necros, on our mark."

As Byron sat up in the captain's chair. Scarlett hopped into his lap again.

"Yeah," she giggled. "Let's light this shit up."

Sweatyballs pushed buttons as the Lionheart began to hum louder. "Standby for hyperspace jump in ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two. Launch!"

The view outside the window exploded into streaks of light. Among the flickering pulses, Byron could see other ships flying alongside them.

Octowar called out, "All ships in formation."

Sweatyballs called back, "We'll arrive in Necrosi space within forty-two minutes."

Xana, Silica, and Chetaara came out of the lift onto the bridge.

Scarlett squealed. "You ladies were awesome out there! Especially you, Xana, you kicked ass."

The lift doors opened again and Gearhead stormed in. He headed straight for Byron. "Captain, I want to lodge a formal complaint. I don't think it's fair that an NPC should be taking over my position. An NPC who isn't even supposed to be on this ship."

Scarlett pointed at him. "An NPC who kicked your ass, technologically speaking."

Infinitz rose from her seat. "I agree with Gearhead. What, are you gonna replace us all with your bloody NPCs?"

Byron held up his hands. "Calm down, everyone. I don't want to replace anybody. Gearhead, you made the demand to choose between you and Xana. To save all our lives, I chose Xana, but I never meant for it to be permanent. Xana, do you wanna be chief engineer?"

Xana rubbed her arms. "Um, no."

"There. I'd rather have you in there, Gearhead. Will you take over as chief engineer?"

Gearhead sighed. "Fine."

Octowar leaned over. "There's also the matter of you telling a superior officer 'fuck you,' Gearhead."

"I was just emotional--"

"This is a military ship, Gear. Chain of command and respect has to be followed. You've just lost your holodeck privileges for a week."

Gearhead grit his teeth, but nodded. "Yes, sir. Sorry, sir."

"Good." Byron stood up. "Now that that's settled, we need to prepare for the fight on Necros. I'm going to check on the shuttle. Octowar, you have the conn. Girls, you're with me."

He headed for the lift again, and rode down to the Lionheart's hangar where they kept the Necrosi shuttle. A team of engineers worked on the shuttle but paused to salute as Byron came in.

"At ease, ladies and gentlemen. How's it going?"

One of the engineers pointed at the shuttle. "Good. We're adding some scoring and exterior damage to make it look like it's been through a fight. Also retrofitted the controls to Galactic Standard to make it easier for you to fly."

"Thanks." He climbed the ramp up into the shuttle where he headed for the cockpit.

He sat down in the pilot's seat and looked over the console which did look more familia, and turned to look up at the other girls behind him.
